Thursday
I was up way too late last night--I saw the light of the sun through the itty bitty furnace room window. Bleah.
As a result, I slept way too late as well. I was awake a few times in the morning for a brief moment or two. I texted Laurie to ask what was going on with Amy as I had texted her several times about the August bills and the house payment but she had not responded. Very shortly after that, Amy texted me and said the bills were paid, so thank goodness for that.
Mom was doing laundry, and she brought down the strawberry cream cheese croissant we had bought at Otto's Bakery yesterday. I ate that then went back to sleep.
I finally got up at aboout 1 pm. I staggered into the family room and watched a couple of nerdy judge shows while I finished sewing the light weight sleep shirt for Chryssie. It is white with cherries printed on it. It looks very cute on her, but it looks unfinished. I have to sew a little ribbon or lace or button or something on it to give it just a little more personality. I also cut out a pair of shorts for her to wear underneath the shirt. A little girl like her should not be going to bed with no pants on.
Mom told me Joni had called and was very upset to hear about Lily's pancreatic cancer. She also said that Jeff (her husband, my bro-in-law) is going in for surgery too--years ago, he dropped his shotgun while chasing a pheasant through a field. Fortunately for him, it landed on its side instead of on its stock. If it had landed on its stock as most of them do, he would have shot himself in the center of his chest and probably would have died on the spot. Instead, he blew a huge hole in the side of his foot.
Now this was ages and ages ago. However, this past few months, his foot has been bothering him. The doctors said some kind of infection was going on in there. So, they scrapped it out a few times in a process that sounded absolutely agonizing, and they had drainage tubes on it. Joni said the crap that drained out of it was pussy and green and smelled like rotting animals. Ew.
So, it seemed to heal up...but a few months later, the scars where the drainage tubes had been burst open and a fresh flow of that nasty green shit started coming out. Apparently his gout has something to do with it too--I don't understand just what exactly is going on with his foot, but apparently the gout or SOMETHING caused by the gout is eating the muscle tissue in his foot.
So, he has to have major surgery in which they will take apart and reconstruct his foot and ankle. They will have to take some muscle tissue out of his buttocks and graft it onto his foot. He has to be in the hospital for at least a week, maybe more, depending on how everything goes, and when he goes home, he has to be on absolute bed rest for a MONTH. He is not to put any weight on his foot at all. He is only allowed out of bed to go to the bathroom, and then he must use crutches.
Apparently, he is in real danger of actually LOSING his foot.
That's scary business.
My cousin Rhonda arrived from South Dakota today to stay with Lily for a while. She and her daughter Rachelle and my late cousin Lee's daughter Hailey went with Lily and Jerry to Mayo to hear what the doctors had to offer for options. Apparently, that was moderately good news. The tumor inside the pancreas is right at the head of it, so they are just going to nip off the head and reroute all the ducts. All of the tumors are very small, so the surgeon feels that they have a very good chance of successfully getting rid of it. Mom did not ask about chemotherapy or radiation, so I don't know if that is a part of it or not. The doctor said it would be a long and probably complex surgery, but I am just happy that they didn't tell her to go home and put her affairs in order. Ack.
Rhonda brought us two five-gallon pails of green beans from her huge garden, an onion the size of an infant's head, and a bunch of cucumbers. Mom and I tipped the green beans, and since there were so many of them, we called Kari and asked if she would like some. She was glad to get some, and she and Cora rode their bikes over to get a nice big bag of them.
Mom also called Kim to see if she would like some, and she said she'd love some. Owatonna is only 15 minutes away from Ellendale, so we hopped in my car and drove to Kim's house with a big bag of green beans and another of cucumbers. When we arrived the last day care kid had just left her house, so all the little munchkins were not running around terrorizing us. LOL.
We talked about one of her little guys, CJ, who is in first grade. The school bus is supposed to drop him off on the corner just down the street from Kim's house after school. Well, the first day of school, they forgot to drop him off. He is supposed to be at Kim's by 3:15, and when he wasn't there by 3:30, she started getting worried. She tried and tried to call the bus company, but there was no answer. Finally at 4, she called CJ's parents at work to tell them what was going on. They got ahold of the bus company, which then figured out that they had forgotten to let him off. So, he had to stay on the bus till the route was done, and he never got to her house till 4:45. When he got there, he was terrified and crying, poor little guy.
So, that was bad...but the NEXT day, it came time for CJ to be getting home from school--and no CJ. Kim called the bus company at 3:30, and they said, "Well, he was dropped off! He should be there in a minute or two."
well, fifteen minutes later, STILL no CJ. So Kim began trying to call the bus company again. Busy...busy...busy. So, she called his parents again. Nobody had any clue where this little guy was! At about 4:30, the bus company called Kim and said, "Are you missing a little boy?"
She said, "Yes, I am."
So then she discovers that they had let him off way over at North Pine instead of where he was supposed to be let off. In his mind, he knew he had to "walk straight" to get to Kim's house...so he walked straight...practically to the High School! A mail man found him sitting on the sidewalk sobbing and asked him what was wrong, and he told the mail man he couldn't find his day care. The mail man knew there was a day care just a few houses down, so he walked him there. The lady who ran the place said, "He's not one of mine." She must have called the bus company, and the bus company called Kim. They said, "Well, we were very surprised that no one had called. Didn't you miss him?"
That pissed Kim off, and she said, "I DID call you at about 3:30. And since then I have been frantic and trying to call you every five minutes but the phone is always busy!"
"I guess we need to find a way to get him to you," the lady said.
"I guess you do," Kim said. "I have 11 other kids here to take care of, and I cannot leave them to go get him. Furthermore, it is illegal for me to transport him in my car!"
The bus company sent a van to get him and take him to Kim's. The poor little kid was still crying and so upset. I can imagine how terrified he was, especially since we pound it into their heads from birth about stranger danger and not wandering off.
Both of the kid's parents were justifiably furious at the bus company. Tonight, the dad sat in Kim's driveway and watched for the bus. Apparently, the bus company finally got its head pulled out of its ass because they dropped little CJ off right outside of Kim's house. They're lucky the dad didn't pull the driver out of the bus and pummel him. I felt so bad for the little guy I almost cried for him myself when she told the story. I could just FEEL his fear and sadness.
Well, at about this point, Kim said, "I think we should go to Dairy Queen!"
Mom and I agreed this was a good idea, and we all hopped in my car. Just as we were settling in, Kim's cell rang. It was Lucas needing a ride home from work. So, I said, "No problem. We'll pick him up."
So, I drove to Godfathers and picked up the Lukie. We had to swing by his friend Thomas's house as Lucas brought him a thing of monkey bread. LOL. I told Lucas he should call Thomas and tell him Shane was driving. Which he did. Shane's driving had scared the hell out of Thomas when he and Lucas were helping me move. When we all pulled into his driveway, laughing like maniacs, Thomas said, "Oh, you guys lied to me."
I said, "Yeah, we're evil like that." Thomas shared a taste of his monkey bread with us--it was fantastic! I can see I am going to have to get some of that myself one of these days.
We dropped the boys off at Kim's house since they did not want to go to DQ. So, off we wild women went to Dairy Queen. Kim had a coupon for a buy one get one free burger. I don't remember what it was called, but it was delicious. It was a nice thick burger with a large fresh leaf of lettuce, a slice of tomato, a slice of onion, and some pickles on it. Mom and Kim had pecan cluster blizzards, and I had a chocolate malt. It was delicious. They wanted to get onion rings too, but I said, "If we are getting onion rings, we have to go to Culvers, they have the best onion rings ever."
We got the family size onion rings at Culvers and as always they were so good. Kim had talked earlier about going to a park to eat, and I asked if they still wanted to. Mom said it was too late and that we should just eat in the parking lot. I said, "Well, I'll pull into walmart's parking lot and park over by those pine trees. Then we can look at them and pretend we are in a park."
We had our little parking lot picnic, giggling and acting as silly as a bunch of junior high girls instead of one senior citizen and to middle aged women.
Kim must have said a dozen times, "This is so fun. We have to do this more often." LOL. We always have fun--even when we aren't doing anything too splendid.
We dropped Kim back at her house.
When Mom and I got home, neither of us felt like freezing the beans, so we put them in the fridge for tomorrow. Mom watched TV upstairs, and I came down to the basement. I had planned to watch a little TV, but my children were beating on the door and howling, so I had to go to the Lair of Despair and snuggle them. As soon as I finish this, I am going to bed.
