Friday, March 27

I got up early ths morning as Dave, the furnace repair guy, is coming today to repair my furnace.  He told me he had another appointment at 8 am.  It was nearly noon by the time he arrived.  He got the furnace working up to capacity again and told me it needed new switches, which he had to order.  He said it would take them about two weeks for the part to come in.  He was going on a voluntary hiatus for two weeks as they are cutting down on the employees in the public arena.  He has a daughter who is very fragile and will die if she gets this virus.  So he volunteered to be one of the guys staying home.  He is not one of the plumbers in the business which is a plumbing and heating company.  But, he very kindly cleaned out my shower drain too.  Then he hung around and chatted for about 45 minutes.  He's a very chatty guy.  He's the only human being I have had actual face to face contact and conversation with in two weeks or more.

It was good to have a real conversation.

The last time he was here, he showed me the pictures on his phone of his trip to Ireland and Scotland last summer and told me all about his daughter.  I told him I would pray for his daughter, which I have been doing.  This time, he told me his thoughts on the state of the world, how he can't stand TV preachers like Jimmy Swaggert and Joel Osteen and I completely agreed with him.  I told him I had been praying daily for his daughter Faith, and he thanked me and asked me to keep it up.

I was kind of bored with my roast beef leftovers, so I dug a bag of Schwann's garlic and herb shrimp out of the freezer and made that.  I thought it would be a meal type thing, but it was only shrimp in a sort of sauce.  I ate about a fourth of the bag, but it didn't satisfy me.  When I eat the rest, I will add rice to it and have a vegetable on the side.  I was still hungry, so I had a bowl of raisin bran crunch.  It was certainly an odd combination, but I was satisfied then.

In the freezer, I discovered a frozen cherry braid, which is like a coffee cake, kind of.  I bought it from a fund raiser that one of the school kids sold me nearly a year ago.  I prepped the pan and set it out to raise as it is a yeast bread thing.  I figured I'd bake it in the morning if it raised like it was supposed to.  It said on the package it was best if it was prepared within 6 weeks of purchase.  I know it was at least a year ago that I bought it.

I spent most of the rest of the day watching TV and monkeying around on the computer.  I like playing the Cat Connection game on Kongregate.  It is a mindless cat-themed version of Mah-Jong.

I still wasn't crazy about the idea of eating more roast beef leftovers at supper time, so I opened the can of Bush's Baked Beans I found in the lazy susan and a couple of skin casing weiners from the local butcher shop.  That supper was really satisfying and delicious.  I am generally not a huge fan of weiners, but every once in a while I crave them.

I spent a lot of time on the phone as well.  Lily is really freaking out down in Texas.  She wants to come home but feels unable to drive herself home as she falls asleep driving when she gets tired.  And she is terrified to stay alone in hotels on the way home and is also scared to pull over and sleep in her car too.  Her children and grandchildren have made her promise to stay home, order her groceries to be delivered and stay out of the club house.  She watches her friends walking to the club house to play cards and have fun and cries.

I don't require human interaction the way she does, so I would be totally fine staying in my own home.  But she has always needed to be out and about to be happy.  If she was up here, in her own home, she'd at least be able to go out in her yard and work in her flower gardens and go through her closets and stuff.  Down in Texas, she is in a small trailer.  She's already cleaned out all  the closets and the storage shed there and cleaned all the nooks and crannies inside the trailer.

I was on the phone from the time I got up again today.  Ugh.

I put the cherry braid, which had raised nicely, in the oven and did dishes while it baked.  When I took it out of the oven, I let it cool while I warmed up some leftover roast beef and had lunch.  By the time I was done eating, the braid was cool enough to frost.  I had a slice of it, and it was delicious.

I didn't do much the rest of the day.  I watched tv, messed around on the computer, and talked on the phone.  I didn't feel like cooking anything, so I made a huge bowl of buttered popcorn and ate it.

It rained most of the day and even did some thundering with lightning later in the afternoon.  It got pretty windy too.

That's about the extent of what my life was about today.
