Mom is out of the hospital
Nov. 19th, 2008 08:07 pmMom had surgery late last night.
The doctors put a "girdle" around her eye to hold the retina in place. It will remain there for the rest of her life, and presumably forever after her life is over as well. The surgery had an 85% chance of success. She had a 15% chance of losing her vision in that eye. And since she's already lost the vision in her other eye, that was a scary prospect.
Well, she could see upon waking up this morning, so that was a good thing. (Rejoices). She does have double vision, but the doctor says that is not uncommon and may last for up to a month.
When I spoke to her tonight, she said that it was already better than it had been this morning.
I was a little irritated last night because Tammy (my little sister) called me and told me Jack (my brother) was all crabby ass because no one had come to the hospital to relieve Kari (my sister in law) and "she'd been with mom since 9 am and hadn't had anything to eat all day and had her contacts in...":
Well, I couldn't get through to her phone; I kept getting the message that her number was no longer in service. Then, when she did call, Mom was still in the Mayo building, not in the hospital. I told her to CALL ME as soon as they admitted mom into the hospital, so I knew if she was at St. Mary's or at Methodist. I told her, "As soon as I know where you are, I will be there."
I had to go home as I had carpooled with Susan, and I did not drive, she did. So I had to go home in order to get my car.
Well, I got home and heard nothing. I made supper and ate it--no call. I felt crusty and decided to take a quick bath. I brought my cell into the bathroom with me--and heard nothing. I put on my pjs and laid on my bed, thinking i would nap if I could and then get dressed. I fell asleep--no call from Kari. LATE in the evening I heard from Tammy about Jack being all pissy.
Well, sorry, but my telepathic powers are just not that well developed.
Sigh.
Tammy sort of told Jack off on the phone--saying, "We've been waiting and waiting to hear something and we haven't heard ANYTHING."
So, Jack cooled off. He was fine when he called me later.
He said the nurses had told Kari to go home and that there was no need for anyone else to come as mom's surgery had been bumped back again--and it was nearly 10 pm then.
So, Kari went home, mom had her surgery, and I went to bed.
This morning, I called mom when I got to school. Her doctor answered the phone, so I got to talk directly to him. He said the surgery went very well. Said she was perky, and that she would be released later that day. They wanted to keep an eye on her for just a little while longer.
I called again in about 10 minutes, as the doctors were messing with her then. She was feeling good. Told me that her surgery only took 45 minutes other than the hour and a half they had told her it could take, meaning that it went really well.
They released her from the hospital at a little after ten a.m.
Jack took her home.
I offered, but she was worried about riding in my car, since my tires are not the best.
School went okay. The kids have seemed unusually loud and rude the last couple of days. I think my tolerance is just low right now because I've been worried about my mom and also because I miss my friend "F" so much.
On a brighter note, though, I seem to be more energetic and motivated than I have been in a while. I actually cooked tonight--well, it wasn't anything too impressive--but I made tuna salad with onions and pickles in it and also pork and beans. It tasted really good.
On my way home from school, I stopped for groceries. My back is messed up. My knees didn't hurt while I was shopping, but my back was killing me. I don't know what the problem is there. I'm sure that favoring my knees has pulled my back out of alignment.
When I got back to West Concord, I dropped off my city water bill and got my mail. At home, i brought my groceries into the house and put them away--I also cleaned out my fridge and sacked up some garbage.
That's about it.
