The extent of my productivity today was gathering and bagging the garbage and recycling from my bedroom area and washing and drying the pink bathroom rugs.  I shelved the books Caleb returned, had meatballs, a Kaiser roll, and an oatmeal bar for lunch, and talked to Mom and Tammy on the phone.  I also had a brief conversation with my cousin Rhonda who asked me to come up with a baby shower game for her daughter's shower at the end of the month.

I messed around on my computer for a while, looking up earwig control measures and baby shower games. I also spent about two hours watching the Joan Baez 75th Birthday Special on YouTube.  I can't believe how lovely she still is and sounds at age 75.  Jackson Browne was one of the special guests, and he looked like shit and sort of slurred his words as he sang.  I still love his music, but he's looking old.  (So am I.)

Mom called around 9:30 pm and said there was someone at her house who wanted to talk to me.  It was Dale Bishman, my dad's friend from high school who was our insurance agent forever before he retired.  He and his wife had stopped in to see Mom and he was wondering how I was doing in the new place.  He said they had driven by my house but had seen no signs of life--which was true, I was sitting in my bedroom (which is where my computer is) in the dark in my pajamas.  I was tired and decided to just crawl into bed with my laptop and my kitties and call it a day at about 8 pm.  I am usually up and about longer, but today was just one of those low energy, low production days.

Collin Raye's "I Think About You" never fail to bring tears to my eyes.

Every time I see  a woman on a billboard sign
I think about you
Saying, "Drink this beer and you'll be mine,"
I think about you
When an actress on a movie screen
Plays Lolita in some old man's dreams,
It doesn't matter who she is
I think about you.

When I see a pretty oman walking down the street
I think about you
Men look her up and down like she's some kind of meat.
I think about you
She wouldn't dare talk to a stranger
Always has to be aware of the danger
It doesn't matter who she is,
I think about you.

You eight years old
Big blue eyes and a heart of gold
When I look at this world, I think about
You and I can't help but see
That every woman used to be
Somebody's little girl, I think about you

Every time I hear peoiple say it's never gonna change,
I think about you
Like it's some kind of joke, some kind of game,
I think about you
When I see a woman on the news
Who didn't ask to be abandoned or abused,
It doesn't matter who she is,
I think about you

It is such a great song--so true.

Every human being walking around on the planet was once someone's sweet little baby.  Who doesn't love an innocent little baby?

What happens to those babies as they grow is what makes them who they are.  But deep inside, there is still that perfect, innocent child that, hopefully, someone loved with all their heart.

Maybe if we could all learn to see each other that way, the world would be much less fucked up.

I don't expect it to happen, but it would be nice.

Musical taste "defines personality"

LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Fans of classical music and jazz are creative, pop lovers are hardworking and, despite the stereotypes, heavy metal listeners are gentle, creative types who are at ease with themselves.

So says Professor Adrian North of Scotland's Heriot-Watt University who has been studying the links between people's personalities and their choice of music.

"People often define their sense of identity through their musical taste, wearing particular clothes, going to certain pubs, and using certain types of slang," North said.

"It's not surprising that personality should also be related to musical preference."

In what North said was the largest study ever conducted into individuals' musical preference and character, researchers asked 36,518 people from around the world to rate how much they liked 104 different musical styles before taking a personality test.

"Researchers have been showing for decades that fans of rock and rap are rebellious, and that fans of opera are wealthy and well-educated," North said.

"But this is the first time that research has shown that personality links to liking for a wide range of musical styles."

The study concluded that jazz and classical music fans are creative with good self-esteem, although the former are much more outgoing whereas the latter are shy.

Country and western fans were found to be hardworking and shy; rap fans are outgoing and indie lovers lack self-esteem and are not very gentle.

Those who like soul music can take heart as the research concluded they are creative, outgoing, gentle, at ease with themselves and have a high self-esteem.

And if you've ever wondered why people driving expensive sports cars often have music blaring from their vehicle, North could have an explanation.

Those who choose to listen to exciting, punchy music are more likely to be in a higher earning bracket, he says, while those who go for relaxing sounds tend to be lower down the pay scale.

North is still looking for volunteers to take part in the research. Details on http://www.peopleintomusic.com/
