I'll Be Damned: A Fiction, Part 3

Cats are unique beings--independent and stubborn with long, long memories. And even though some people say that loyalty is the forte of the canine species, my feline companions apparently saw my misery and self-reproach as evidence that I was still the human who had been feeding them and cleaning their litter boxes and buying them catnip mice for most of their lives. Lucy Lu squirmed in my hands and crawled up to my shoulder to lick the tears from my face and rub her tiny muzzle against my cheek. The other two slinked forward and sniffed me. The big black tom hissed and retreated, but he did not strike out at me again.
So this is my life now, I thought. I wondered if I could even go to work. I laughed mirthlessly. I'll have to get a night job.
The thirst was coming onto me again. Maddening thirst. As if a depraved alien intelligence had invaded my mind, screaming in my head: I must feed. I MUST feed.
I set Lucy Lu on the floor and rolled her jingle ball across the room. I watched as she pounced on it and batted it around the room.
I had to be away from these creatures whose hearts pumped warm blood through their veins. These creatures that i loved. Lest my thirst overwhelmed me and I devoured them.
i had to think.
Grabbing my overcoat from the hook at the top of the stairs, I stepped out into the dismal night. The sky was overcast and the air was thick with fog. How appropriate, I thought. My life appears to have transformed into an incredibly trite horror film. Right down to the the creepy fog.
