Fireflies

Yesterday I worked on my current room most of the day.  I even did a little bit of pattern organizing until my cat jumped up and sprawled across the area I was trying to work.

When it got to be about 8 pm, I figured I had better investigate some kind of food-like substance for supper.  I finally decided to order a canadian bacon and pineapple pizza--light sauce, extra pineapple.  Well, they never really give me extra pineapple, even though I always ask for it.  Bastards.

I was in my pink sleep shirt because I like to be cool and have free range of movement when I am cleaning--especialy in a room which has no air conditioning.  Thankfully a lady delivered my pizza this time, but I have answered the door to a gentleman in that nightie before as well.  I'm sure they have seen worse.  And if they haven't, oh well.

Anyhow, there was a large firefly meandering through the air in my front yard.  It had a very bright light.  I have never seen fireflies in my yard before this summer.  Seeing them always makes makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside--and special--as if I had seen something magical.

I know, I know.  They are just bugs--but a little bit of that childish "magic" still remains in my soul.  Just like when I am out and about at dusk and I see the first star of the evening appear, the thought always comes unbidden to my mind
---"Star light, star bright--first star I see tonight--I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight."

This was such fun, a glimpse of your life, even to fireflies and extra pineapple.

(My daughter told me a firefly got into her house last week and was flashing around in her bedroom, then got into her hair, which fascinated the cat and drove her to distraction.)

Magical post. Really.

It's true--I can't shake it, regardless of how cynical I can be sometimes, I always have this huge streak of romanticism in me...that all of life should be and can be and might someday be beautiful, if we all just try hard to do what is right and look for the small pieces of paradise, where they poke through into this world.

WOW.

I haven't thought of fireflies in years.

We don't have them in So. Cal.

I saw them once when I visited my relatives in Connecticut. I was 17 and it was August. Hot and muggy. But I remember sitting in the backyard of my Aunt and Uncles house and seeing fireflies in the woods. Amazing. Magical.
