The underground lair.
Jun. 28th, 2011 12:36 amIt is not that easy to transfer thirty years worth of gathered goods from a three plus bedroom house to a single (albeit rather large) room in the basement of my mom’s house. I’ve been working on this project since school let out and it isn’t getting any easier.
However, I do feel like I am making progress. I have some photographic evidence to show for my efforts. It isn’t perfectly organized yet, but it is at least a pallet to work from.

This is a straight on view of my desk on the northest end of the room.

This is farther down on the west wall. The desk and the area around it is messy in this picture, but I left it much neater than this when I left. There is some fuzzy fuschia yarn in the basket that I intend to make into a “prayer shawl.” My aunt has a couple of patterns and I think it would work up very pretty.

This is the bed. The only window in the room is above the headboard. This mattress is a queen sized mattress and it is as hard as a fucking rock. It has to go. The headboard is for a regular full-sized mattress. I am hoping that I can buy a decent full-sized mattress, which I feel is big enough to hold me and the cats comfortably and it will also take up less room. My quarters are tight enough as it is. Any little bit of extra space will be welcome. Also, that bedspread and stuff is my mom’s. I will replace it with something of my own. The bed is on the west wall. Next to it, further south, is a pretty good-sized bookcase. On the south wall is the large closet.

This picture was taken from the north side of the room looking directly south. You can see about half of the closet. It is a deep closet. I have two of my short bookcases behind the clothes on the east side of the closet. I’m saving the west side of the closet for totes of fabric and yarn and dolls and stuff like that.
The door leads to the family room in the basement. Immediately to the right of the door, outside of the room, is a little storage area under the stairs. Immediately to the south of that is the stairway going to the main floor.
On the east wall are three bookcases--two tall and one short. On top of the short one is my CD collection. Against the closet wall to the right is my small black DVD shelf. It holds pretty much my entire collection of DVDs.
The dresser matches the headboard and another dresser in the room. They are the set that my mom and dad bought when my Great Grandpa Harpel left them some money in his will. It is a pretty sturdy set. It isn’t really my style, but I don’t hate it.

There's a little bit better view of the DVD shelves. I have to make use of every little nook and cranny present.

Here are the bookshelves and dolls straight on. These are on the east wall. To the Right of this is the door to the family room.

This is the dresser head on. To the right, you can see the two tall narrow bookshelves filled with books and some of my Tonner and Kish doll collection.
I bought the two small vintage lamps at an auction many many years ago. Sadly, the prisms are plastic, not actual glass.

This moves a little further to the left. The door there is to the bathroom that is off of my bedroom. Those two large suitcases were full of fabric which is now temporarily put away in the closet.

And there is the straight north shot. The door there is to the laundry room. The shelf to the left of the door belongs to my mom. She used to have her beanie baby bears on it. Now it holds a few of the knick-knacky things that I cannot bear to part with. My mom and my aunt bought me those six precious moments dolls at a garage sale once. They are not really the kind of dolls I like to collect, but I cherish them because my Aunt Darla, my favorite aunt, and my mom got them for me on a whim.
And they are really cute.

Just another view of my desk. I’m sitting on the bed, looking north at it--side view, mostly.
There you have it. The first public peek at the Underground Lair.

well done

Date: 2011-06-30 03:31 am (UTC)I know what you mean about downsizing the bed. When I had to get a new mattress I sold my King sized brass bed and bought an antique bed and got a Queen mattress instead. I could easily sleep in a standard double but it would be too small for the headboard and I *love* my bed. There are some pieces I wouldn't care about and some I wouldn't part with.
But no matter what, no way could I fit into one room in my parents' house.
The Governor finally signed the budget but it hinges on predicted revenues. If they fall short, we may end up with 7 days less of school next year. What does that mean to me? It means that I'll have to do my taxes asap I get the W2 and I won't be able to spend my refund until the end of the school year. Our first raise in six years is supposed to kick in June 2012. I'm wondering if we'll still see those raises. I haven't had a raise since 2006. Plus I lost income with the furlough days this year and next.
That desk is just wonderful. I love the way it fits in the corner and there is an extension to the left. You can get so much done at a desk like that.
You are going to feel so much more at home when you've got a new, comfy mattress and your own bed linens and bedspread.
The finishing touch is when you have your kitty babies with you.
At least you won't have a long drive to visit your Mom once you're all moved in. She'll be built in company for when you're feeling a little lonely.
