There are, of course, so many books that have made profound impacts on my life that it is very difficult to choose three.  So, I will choose three that pushed me into directions that have lasted forever.

[Error: unknown template qotd]The Doll's House by Rumor Godden.  I believe this book about sentient dolls was the spark that ignited my passion for dolls.

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.  It was the first time a book ever moved me to tears.  I realized how deeply books and fiction can affect our emotions.

The Beyond (author unknown to me).  When I was in 10th grade or thereabouts, I decided to read all the fiction books in the library of my school.  I came to this ratty looking book as I was working my way through the authors alphabetically, and it was the first SF/Fantasy book I had ever read.  It was about extra sensory perception and humanity's reaction to it.  It ignited in me a life long love of science fiction and fantasy--AND a deep interest in extra sensory perception as well!  I wish I could find a copy of this book and read it again.

Other books of importance:  The Holy Bible, Roget's Thesaurus, and Webster's Dictionary.  I had those three books at the head of my bed and I read in all three of them every day from the time that I was very young.  I  read the Thesaurus like most people read cook books.  LOL.   When I got to college, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare and The Canterbury Tales became significant to me.

Rumer Godden!?

She translated Prayers From the Ark.

Are you sure the title was The Beyond and it was a book not a compilation of short stories? Because I'm thinking it might be a short story in a Poul Anderson's Beyond the Beyond. Possibly The Sensitive Man.

Yes, she also wrote children's books about dolls. I liked Miss Peach and Miss Plum as well.

The Beyond was a novel about a little boy with a tremendous ESP ability in a frail and dying body. When his buddy, a very healthy body but not too bright became mortally ill, this little boy's personality "moved in" to the his body, knowing that his own frail body would not survive without his mental determination, to give the sick boy strength to live. The second child didn't have the mental strength to stay in the fever ridden, weak body. The first had incredible mental strength, so when the sick boy gave up and moved on, he just stayed in his body. It was a pretty good book.

Could this be the book?

It doesn't sound like it to me, but the title and copyright date are about right. Could you have gotten the title wrong?
