Southern Buttermilk Pie
Sep. 18th, 2017 11:35 pmSouthern Buttermilk Pie
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 3/4 cup sugar
2 large eggs
3 tbsp. flour
pinch salt
1 stick butter, melted
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp nutmeg
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix everything together until smooth and pour into unbaked 9" pie crust. Sprinkle top lightly with nutmeg.
Bake 15 minutes.
Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake 45 minutes.
Cool to allow filling to set.
I thought it was very good. It reminded me of pumpkin pie. Probably because of the nutmeg. Everyone who had a piece thought it was quite good.
I will probably bake a couple of these for Thanksgiving.

Date: 2017-09-20 03:12 pm (UTC)I am not much of a pie maker--but I knew I had to try this recipe when my internet friend from Oklahoma gave it to me. It's just so different.
My sister Tammy is the pie maker.
Now that I can buy Pillsbury crusts ready made, I might try a few more pie recipes. Now that I have my own kitchen, it doesn't matter if I have a complete failure. My mother will not be here to rant and rave about messes and wasting materials.

Egg custard pie is easy. You blind bake a crust. Then you make egg custard from a pudding mix like it says on the package, pour it into the shell, sprinkle with nutmeg and put it in the refrigerator to set. It's like having custard in a pie instead of a dish. I haven't looked in ages but I think Jello still makes egg custard.
