I feel sorry for kids who've never been "allowed" to fail. They leave their comfy home/school environment, where parents and teachers have taken all the responsibilities off the kids shoulders, and run into a brick wall called THE REAL WORLD, where they suddenly face failure with no preparation for it.
Life has winners AND losers. You've got to EARN the blue ribbon. It's much better to learn that when the stakes are small, like a spelling test, than when you're life and career are at stake.
