I don't know if it was the "best" gift I've ever had, but it was certainly the one that touched my heart the most.
Many moons ago, when I worked at the hellhole known as Triton, I helped a colleage do her masters' degree project. She paid me, and with the money, I bought a $70 Ken doll--a handsome Harley dude with long hair. I told the kids about it and showed it to them.
They said, "Now you need a Harley for him to ride on."
I said, "Yeah--not happening. The Harley costed over $100. You guys can buy it for me for Christmas." And we all laughed.
Now at this time, I had a crew of kids who would come to my room EARLY--like 6:30 am--every day to play Magic the Gathering and other games or just hang out and talk. Unbeknownst to me, Ben Pischke started collecting funds from all these kids.
On the day before Christmas vacation, he and the whole group came in with a giant box wrapped in Christmas paper. Yes. They had collected enough money to go to Toys R Us to buy me that motorcycle. $100+ is a hell of a lot of money for kids to spend on their teacher. I cried and they laughed.
I cried because I was so touched that they would do such a sweet thing.
I will never ever part from that beautiful motorcycle because every time I look at it, I feel the love.
