This is a little fuzzy, but you can see how dessicated the corn leaves are--they are completely shriveled and pointing straight up in the air like a cactus. The poor stuff is growing in very sandy soil. And there has been no rain here for far too long.

This corn is growing in very sandy soil north of Albert Lea--you can see exactly where the sand is by where the corn is completely dried up and yellow. The green corn is also terribly thirsty--you can tell by how dissicated the leaves are and how they stand straight up rather than arching out and down like corn usually does.

It has rained a ton up in northern Minnesota and it has rained some up by the Twin Cities, but down here, it has been weeks since we have had a nice shower. We need ran very bad right now. The corn has tassled and the silks are popping out of the ears. We need the rain to rinse the pollen from the tassle down to the corn cob which is developing the kernals now.

At some point in the far distant past, this area might have been a beach near the shallow sea that covered most of North America. The farmer who owns the land is letting someone peel off the crop and buy the sand that is under it. It's nice, fine, pretty sand. Nice for making concrete or using to create a "beach" on a private piece of land with a water access.

See how the sand area weaves through the richer, moister soil.

Most of the corn in this field is dead. The sandy soil just doesn't hold moisture the way the rich black soil does.

Peaches was in the middle of giving herself a vigorous and enthusiastic tongue washing. She looked so damned cute that I had to try to document it. As you can see, she took grave offense to beng photographed during her ablutions!

I looked over and what did I see? My two orange babies napping together AND "holding hands." I love how these guys adore each other and are so affectionate and physically close with each other.
