Pine Tree Lost a Limb

It's just one branch, but it is easily as tall as a standard Christmas tree. That snapped off in the heavy winds we had the other day.

Mom wants to cut the whole dang tree down now as it has several dying branches.

Are they branches dying because the tree is diseased and dying or just because they have been damaged in a storm? If the later, they just remove the branches. If the entire tree is slowly dying then it needs to come down before it falls down and does damage or kills someone.
