Writer's Block: Back to the Future
Feb. 20th, 2012 09:45 amSometimes, homocidal rage is the only thing that makes sense.
My nephew Erik is a big fan of sugar cookies--especially FROSTED sugar cookies. Cora and I baked and frosted a batch for him for his birthday in October. It's been a long time since I've been current in my posting, so I thought I would add this in now. His little dog Jazzy is in his other hand. She is a cutie.
My cousin Jim's daughter Cynthia came over to the house with a bag full of stuff and a heart full of desire to make a barbie house. I had saved the big box one of my mom's christmas presents came in because it was an ideal size for a Barbie room. In it there were a couple big chunks of styrofoam. I drew lines on the styrofoam with a sharpie and her little brother sawed through them and made this fireplace shape.
I drew a few rocks to give her the idea, then she drew the rest. She painted them with watercolor paints mixed up like paste so it would stick to the styrofoam.
I stapled a piece of black felt to the back; the kids gathered some sticks from the yard for "logs," and I cut red, yellow, and orange "flames" out of felt and glued them amongst the logs to look like a real "fire." We glued a pice of purple felt to the mantle and a scrap of gold braid along the top of the fireplace to finish it off. The "hearth" is a shiny white flap off the narrow end of the box.
We printed off a cute picture of a herd of "My Little Pony" critters and framed it with cardboard and colored computer paper. She decorated the frame with tiny sea shells, little fake pearls and tiny bed turtles.
I love the fireplace. I may have to make one for myself one day soon.
The wall paper is some wild pink shelf paper Cynthia got out of a "free" box at a garage sale. The ceiling is dark turquoise colored computer paper, and the rest of the ceiling is a scrap of wall paper border that also came out of the free box at that garage sale.
The carpet is a piece of pale pink felt that is left over from making '50s poodle skirts for another cousin's little girls, long ago.
The chair is a photo frame from Hobby Lobby which I bought for my own collection, but since I have so little room, I decided to give it to her--it just seemed to fit in that wildly pink room.
The bed is a Tettly Tea box upholstered with pink felt and a bit of fiberfill. The bottom sheet is some left over pink heart fabric that's been laying around for a while. The pillows were made of felt and fiber fill then I made the pillow cases out of matching fabric and a bit of another fabric that has tiny hearts and set off with a little ribbon trim and bows.
She took it home with her that day--I also made a two sided coverlette out of the pink heart and red heart fabric and put ribbons on it too. It was horrifically gaudy, but she loved it. I wasn't able to finish it before she took the room home, so I gave it to her the following Sunday. If I ever get over to their house, I will take another picture of it.
We worked on the chair some more too--We covered the photo hole with pink felt and put a tiny "cameo" of a rose in the middle. We made a couple of throw pillows as well for the chair. I'd like to do a braided rug for the front of the fire place, but haven't done it yet.
Michael, her brother, wanted to do a tent for his GI Joe, but I talked him into a hunting lodge instead. I cut out the bear shape and showed him how to sew it and stuff it with a little fiberfill. I did the head for him--puttingf in the mouth and teeth (thin white cardstock), a black tiny pom pom for the nose, and black beads for the eyes. The "claws are cut from black felt. The tale is another pompom.
His stitches got bigger and bigger, but he's 8 and he loves it. So, it's all good.
You can see the face better from the front. I am really quite pleased with the face. I may have to make one for myself, eventually--I'll be tweaking it a bit more, too.
I'm not too crazy about the body--I'll have to look up some pictures of real bear skin rugs and see how they look. I love the concept of a hunting lodge. I've got an idea for a mounted moose head floating around in my little pea brain now. :D
Did I ever post this?
This is the car I painted and decorated for my mom's church activity. The head lights are tiny yellow buttons. The tail lights a translucent red pushpins. The cross and wings are appliques.
I thought it was darling.
